Dr. Hatch is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of California Keck School of Medicine and is part of the USC Sports Medicine / Shoulder & Elbow Service, a section of the USC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is on the staff at USC University Hospital. He specializes in disorders of the shoulder, knee, and elbow as well as all sports-related injuries. He uses advanced arthroscopic and open surgical techniques to restore damaged joints, ligaments, and bones. In addition to teaching medical students and orthopaedic surgical residents, he is also part of the USC Sports Medicine Fellowship.
Dr. Hatch is also affiliated with the University of Southern California Athletic Medicine Department which provides care for all student-athletes and athletic teams, including the USC Trojans Football and Basketball teams, at the University of Southern California.
A native of Montana, Dr. Hatch received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Hatch performed his orthopaedic residency training in the Department of Orthopaedics at Emory University School of Medicine. While there, he received two Robert Kelly Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting Awards for excellence in orthopaedic research. In addition he was elected Administrative Chief Resident by his peers and faculty, and served for three years as a Representative to Resident-Faculty Committee in Emory Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Hatch earned additional subspecialty fellowship training in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery at the internationally renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. While there, he also served as an associate physician for the Los Angeles Lakers professional basketball team, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Angels Major League Baseball teams, the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks professional ice hockey teams, the Los Angeles Galaxy professional soccer team, the Los Angeles Sparks professional women’s basketball team, and the Los Angeles Avengers professional arena football team.
Following his sports medicine and arthroscopic fellowship in Los Angeles, Dr. Hatch earned as second subspecialty fellowship in complex shoulder reconstruction at Harvard Medical School. In addition to training as a reconstructive shoulder fellow on the prestigious Harvard Shoulder Service, Dr. Hatch also held an appointment as Clinical Instructor of Orthopaedics for the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the prestigious Brigham & Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals.
In addition to his private clinical practice, where he treats both athletes and non-athletes alike, Dr. Hatch is very active in research and medical education. He lectures and teaches at conferences and courses around the country. With over 44 peer-reviewed publications, 9 textbook chapters and multiple national research awards, Dr. Hatch’s research interests focus on knee and shoulder instability, stability of the reverse total shoulder prosthesis, treatment of infected shoulder prosthesis, outcomes following multiligament knee injuries and testosterone supplementation in orthopaedic post-operative rehabilitation.
